I regretted to learn from you on paying my crew orr at Hong Kong that you have had notice from the Government respecting your honour and straight forwardness in dealing with our Chinese Grews. The counts on which you are charged appears te me very unfair, or I can honestly say that you have always performed your business in a most satisfactory manner, and showed nor heard of the no partiality in any way, and I have never seen, men being unjustly treated by you, I have paid my crew off in your presence now eighteen tires, end in each case the money to pay them off with, had been drawn from my Agents or brought on board by the Compradore, and you have counted it out in my presenc and paid the men off with it, I therefore fail to see how spurious coin can be paid in lieu of good, I am of firm opinion that the ordinary shipmaster would not think of doing such thing and I have never met with an instance where a man has brought a bad coin to me, nor have I ever heard any mention of their receiving any, I have always kept in touch with my crew, and know they would not hesitate to tell me about it if they received bad money,

whoever

made this accusation evidently has a very poor opinion of ship- master or knows nothing at all about him or the way the crews

are paid off.
